Beatrock Presents: FATGUMS X BAMBU…A PEACEFUL RIOT…

May 14, 2009 · 1 Comment

Just copped the new Fatgums X Bambu EP, “…A Peaceful Riot…,” off the Beatrock website and treated myself to a shirt as well. The EP is dope, with the always talented Fatgums (hip hop producer and med school student as well?? Go ‘head brotherman.) providing lush, slappin beats for the ever solid Bambu to rip with righteous, stereotype-killin’ lyrics.

Support a locally-owned, community-oriented business by getting your copy off the Beatrock website, but for those who don’t fool with physical CDs anymore, it’s also available for download on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, Napster, etc.

If you haven’t peeped it already, Blue Scholars released a new song and video at the start of ‘09, called “Coffee & Snow.”

Also, peep the new Bambu track, “When Will the Time Come” that flips an old Grain of Sand sample to discuss the current Gaza situation. Hot fire!

A Song for Ourselves World Premiere 2.28.09

Gotta give the homie Tad Nakamura some shine and encourage those on the west coast to hit up the premiere of his new film, “A Song for Ourselves,” on February 28th in LA.

“During the 1970s when Asians in America were invisible to the country–and more importantly even to themselves–the late Chris Iijima’s music provided the voice and identity an entire generation had been in search of. Through animated photographs, intimate home movies, archival footage and Chris’ own songs, A Song For Ourselves shows how Chris’ music unleashed the contagious energy of the Asian American Movement with an unrelenting passion for social justice and a life well lived.”

I was very blessed to know Chris Iijima and his wonderful family personally. As one of the most brilliant, talented and progressive brothers I have ever had the privilege of knowing/learning from, I was deeply saddened by his death a few years ago and thought he still had so much to share with the world. With this film, I’m happy that in spite of his passing, audiences will still have the opportunity to meet Chris in some way and learn from his experiences.

The premiere will also feature performances by Blue Scholars, Bambu and Kiwi, who are in my opinion some of the most talented brothers in the hip hop game right now. Don’t sleep, west coasters! It’s gonna be a really dope show. For more info and to purchase tickets, check out the film’s blog.

You can watch Tad’s first film, “Yellow Brotherhood,” over at vimeo now.

An iPhone/iPod version can also be downloaded here.

Bambu ~ Exact Change

October 15, 2008 · 7 Comments

The homies Tad and Colin have already written reviews on this one, so I don’t want to just repeat what they have already eloquently put forth, but I had to give my own shout out to Bambu and call on everyone to cop his new album, “…Exact Change…

Bam’s always gotten love on The Cheddar Box, and this album is no different. Musically, the production slaps and carries a really cohesive sound. Lyrically, he’s dope as ever, riding the beats well and infusing the songs with an honest, progressive, unapologetic political analysis.

I admire and respect many aspects of a lot of emcees, but I respect and admire Bam as a whole person because with his albums, I always feel that in a sense, he gives you his whole self. This one is no different. It’s available for sale on the Beatrock website or on iTunes later this month.

Also be on the lookout for a new Bambu EP fully produced by Sabzi (Blue Scholars) in early 2009.

T.Naka & The Guns

April 21, 2008 · 3 Comments

Bambu’s “Chairman Mao” video, directed and edited by the homie Tad Nakamura, world premier on The Cheddar Box! Just kidding, it’s actually posted over on Tad’s youtube page, along with other videos he produced (everyone who went to UCSC Oakes College has to watch “The Muralist”). Between this and my earlier post on Broken Halos, what can I say? All my homies have bookoo talent.

Below is a short doc on Bambu and the Native Guns crew Tad put together awhile back. Those brothers are the truth for real.
