In terms of health care reform, I’m a fan of a single payer system that basically expands the national health plan we already have, Medicare, but makes everyone eligible for it instead of just the poor. Michigan Congressman John Conyers has proposed for the US to adopt such a system in a bill that he has co-sponsored with Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, HR 676.
Thus, I was happy to hear that Rep. Conyers and other advocates of the single payer system were invited to President Obama’s Health Care Summit taking place today. Obama has not publicly supported a single payer system.
